The Swimming Pool

"See a lot of y'all don't understand Kendrick Lamar because you wonder how I could talk about money, hoes, clothes, God and history
all in the same sentence. You know what all them things have in common? Only half of the truth if you tell it. See I spent twenty-three years on this earth searching for answers til' one day I realised I had to come up with my own. I'm not on the outside looking in, I'm not on inside looking out, I'm in the dead fucking center looking around. You ever seen a newborn baby kill a grown man? That's an analogy for the way the world make me react. My innocence been dead. So the next time I talk about money, hoes, clothes, God and history all in the same sentence just know I meant it, and you felt it cause you too are searching for answers. I'm not the next pop star, I'm not the next socially aware rapper, I am a human motherfucking being over dope ass instrumentation: Kendrick Lamar." - Ab-Soul's Outro, Kendrick Lamar.

Since 2005, and even before that, our fellow Black Hippy Kendrick Lamar has been making music for the geniuine fan of rap while simultaneously trying to ignite social reform. If you know me, you know I'm one of the biggest conscious rap enthusiasts out there, but this isn't just conscious rap anymore. Black Hippy has put Hip-Hop back on the map. What's your life about? Enlighten me.

"Swimming Pools (Drank)" is Kendrick's second single off of his LP "good kid, m.A.A.d city" said to debut on October 2nd. At face value, Swimming Pools is another of Kendrick's singles that you can't help but vibe to. Sound familiar doesn't it? Take singles such as his latest Cartoons & Cereal, and classics such as Rigamortus, Ignorance is Bliss, and Barbed Wire. What do these songs have in common? They exude the K. Dot magic that has the abiliy to drag in any type of fan: conscious rap fans such as myself, hard Hip-Hop heads searching for nostalgic songs, bandwagon fans of course, and people who love to hear good music.

Kendrick never fails to use poetry, lyrical delivery, and his clever genius to share a story with his fans. Swimming Pool (Drank) depicts the result of alcohol running through more than just his veins. He witnessed his family consume enough alcohol to fill a swimming pool, hence the name of the song.

"Some people wanna fit in with the popular. That was my problem."
Everyone has a vice, alcohol happens to be just that for more than one kind of person. Combining moral justification, corruption, and a catchy hook... yeah it's just that, genius. Not to mention the marvelous production by T-Minus who brought you "classics" such as "I'm On One" and "The Motto". Creds to T-Minus though.

"Nigga why you babysittin only 2 or 3 shots?
I'mma show you how to turn it up a notch
First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in."

Ah, the plot thickens. (sorry Lu) Parties and gatherings always have that one jerkoff calling everyone out because they haven't had enough to drink. So the moral of the story is, enjoying yourself should never be compromised due to what someone else's ignorance.
Be on the look out for good kid, m.A.A.d city this October. If you haven't listened to Kendrick until now, start with C4, and continue to listen to Overly Dedicatedand one of my all-time favorites Section 80. You won't regret it.

You're welcome.
